What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of the cannabis plant.  Today the therapeutic properties of CBD are being tested and confirmed by scientists and doctors around the world as a safe, non-addictive substance,  with a robust therapeutic profile.

Many people are seeking alternatives to pharmaceuticals with harsh side effects – medicine more in synch with natural processes. By tapping into how we function biologically on a deep level, CBD can provide relief for chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, depression and many other conditions.

None of the information we provide here should be taken as clinical recommendation or medical advice – we’re not health professionals, and we certainly don’t claim to be. If at all possible, arrange an appointment to speak with a clinical professional about the proper use and dosing of CBD oil.

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with our bodies by enhancing the effects of the compounds in our bodies called “endogenous cannabinoids”.  These “endocannabinoids” are part of a regulatory system called the “endocannabinoid system”.

A system that’s helped us understand how and why our bodies regulate an extensive range of physiological processes that affect our daily experiences like mood, energy levels, our intestinal fortitude, immune activity, blood pressure, bone density, glucose metabolism, how we experience pain, stress, hunger, and more.

The effect of an endocannabinoid system that isn’t functioning optimally, in one word, is DISEASE.  In nearly all pathological conditions, it’s been shown that the endocannabinoid system has been dysregulated

So, it stands to reason that there’s therapeutic benefit in maintaining and regulating your endocannabinoid system and that the progression of almost all disease could potentially be slowed or halted in this regulated environment as Pal Pacher and George Kunos, scientists with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), suggested in a 2014 publication.

What are the Benefits of CBD?

Anxiety, Depression & Insomnia

CBD Oil has been associated with the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and insomnia to name but a few. Cannabinoids bind to the brain’s receptors and influence the production of serotonin which, in turn, regulates mood, sleep and stress control.

Pain Relief & Anti-inflammatory

CBD Oil is one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatories and as a result, can be used in the treatment of chronic pain. It may also alleviate the symptoms of a host of inflammatory diseases such as asthma, arthritis, autoimmune conditions and hepatitis to name but a few. Chronic migraine sufferers have also been found to experience pain relieving results through the use of CBD oil.

Acne & Skincare

As a natural anti-inflammatory, CBD Oil helps to unblock clogged pores and hair follicles that lead to acne. In addition, through minimizing the spread of damaged cells, it can be used to treat acne scarring as well as Eczema. CBD’s high vitamin and moisture content also promotes overall skin health.

Weight Loss & Metabolic Diseases

Cannabinoids are associated with increased metabolic activity. This, in turn, can encourage weight loss and its related benefits, such as an improvement in heart conditions, blood pressure and diabetes. It also promotes increased energy levels and focus.

Other Diseases

CBD Oil can aid in the treatment, as well as the symptoms of numerous diseases. Besides offering relief from pain and inflammation, it has been linked to reduced tremors and less intense seizures in Parkinson and Epilepsy patients respectively.

According to recent studies conducted by Israeli scientists, Diabetes patients could also benefit through the use of CBD oil.

Preventative Treatment

Due to its brain stimulating, anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties, cannabinoids have been associated with the prevention of a variety of conditions. These include; Alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease and multiple sclerosis (MS).

General Wellbeing

By influencing the production of serotonin, CBD tends to create a calming effect on users, along with a general sense of wellbeing. It is also linked to an improved immune system, which fends off colds, flu and other common ailments.

How Do I Use it?

CBD supplements are most commonly taken orally as drops. Take your drops sublingually, or under your tongue and hold there for around a minute before swallowing to allow the drops to be diffused through the mucous membranes beneath your tongue. Because there are a great many capillaries under the tongue, it has a direct route into your bloodstream, allowing it to work faster and more efficiently.

Taking your drops sublingually is preferable to swallowing immediately, as it must first pass through your gastrointestinal tract, the stomach and the intestines where most absorption takes place, but also where some of the CBD may be destroyed by stomach acids. Then it is filtered by the liver before entering the bloodstream. CBD capsules can be swallowed immediately and are preferred by those that can’t handle the taste of CBD, but it should be noted that higher dosages may be required as less of the CBD may enter the bloodstream as a result of the destructive effects of the digestive system.
